{"id":177,"date":"2023-07-29T10:19:08","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T10:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/acd.uasd.edu\/?page_id=177"},"modified":"2024-02-01T10:39:04","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T10:39:04","slug":"horticulture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/acd.uasd.edu\/index.php\/horticulture\/","title":{"rendered":"Horticulture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Department of Horticulture<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n<p>The Department of Horticulture at the College of Agriculture, Dharwad\u00a0 came into existence in 1948 to teach the subject of Horticulture\u00a0 to the undergraduate students of B.Sc. (Agri.) course and to conduct research on various horticulture crops of the region and to disseminate the developed technologies.\u00a0 Presently, Department is offering undergraduate courses to\u00a0 the extent of 13 credits (six courses) to B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, 4 credits (two courses) to B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture Business Management (ABM) and Cooperation, two credits (One course) each to B.Sc. (Community Science) and B. Tech. (Food Science) programmes.\u00a0 There are 20 credits of Agricultural Experiential Learning (AEL) are also offered to Final year B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture.\u00a0 It also offers three courses to Diploma programme in Agriculture.\u00a0 As a post graduate department, it offers M.Sc. (Agri.) in Horticulture and Ph. D. programmes. The department has the responsibility of maintaining the orchards, plantations ornamental gardens in the University premises as a developmental \/ corporate activities along with production of genuine seeds and planting material of several horticulture crops and sold to farmers at nominal prices which in turn helps in generation of internal funds. It has been striving its best to offer upto date knowledge to the students and technologies to the farming community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Post-graduate teaching in department was started in 1953. As many as 419 students have obtained M.Sc. (Agri.) in Horticulture and 91 Ph.D. in Horticulture since inception of the PG programme.\u00a0 \u00a0Besides, the alumni of the Department have occupied prominent positions in public and private sector undertakings.\u00a0 One of our alumni, late Dr. Manmohan Attavar, first time established Indo-American Hybrid Seeds Co., in India for vegetable and flower seed production on industrial scale to cater the needs of national and international market.\u00a0 The alumni of this Department are in better positions, viz., Dr. B.S. Patil, is presently the Director, Vegetable and fruit improvement centre, at University of Texas (A&amp;M), USA and Dr. G. Ravishankar, headed as Director of Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, Lucknow.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Department has developed several varieties of horticultural crops through post graduate research. This Department has the distinction of releasing new varieties\/ hybrids for the first time in the country &#8211; two sapota hybrids, one each in curry leaf, coccinia, and drumstick.
