Department of Animal Science

            The Department of Animal Sciences was started in the year 1947. The department is involved in teaching and training of students in several courses related to Animal Sciences. The students from BSc(Hons) Agriculture, BSc(Hons) Agri Business Management and BSc(Hons) Community Sciences are taught in the Department. The Department is closely affiliated to the Livestock farms- the Dairy Unit, Poultry Unit and Sheep/Goat Units, which are used for the practical training purposes. About 54 students are given hands on training on Livestock and Poultry Production and Management during their last semester under the Experiential Learning Program. 

            The faculty that have worked in the Department of Animal Sciences, Dr V.S. Kulkarni (Former Professor and Head) and Dr. Bhageerathi Pugashetti (Professor and Head, Dairy Unit) have been instrumental in the recognition of the Dharwadi Buffaloes as a recognised breed. Dr. S.V. Hosamani (Former Professor and Head) has developed the technology for use of rain tree pods as livestock feed. Dr. Javed Mulla (Former Professor and Head) was instrumental in popularizing the improved varieties of local chicken such as Giriraja in the northern districts of Karnataka state. The Department is currently headed by Dr. Anil Kumar G. K, Assistant Professor and Head from July 2020.
